Transgender Community

Like all U-M health plans, GradCare covers medically necessary gender-affirming services for members with gender dysphoria, following standards of care from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. This coverage includes medically necessary genital surgery, mastectomy in female-to-male transition, hormone therapy and counseling services. Read more about GradCare coverage for gender-affirming services.

The Benefits Office has designated a specific staff member who is a member of the LGBT Ally Program and is knowledgeable about and sensitive to the unique benefit related issues that transgender members of our community may encounter. GradCare members with questions about benefit issues related to transgender status are encouraged to contact Kate Van Valkenburgh at 734-647-4021 or katevv@umich.edu.

Using the Plan

GradCare members must select a Primary Care Physician (PCP) from a network that includes Michigan Medicine, University Health Service, and all U-M Premier Care Network 1 providers. If you do not choose a PCP, BCN will assign one to you. You can change your PCP at any time by calling BCN Customer Service at (800) 658-8878.

When you enroll in GradCare you will receive an ID card from BCN. The card will show the U-M Premier Care logo on the right hand corner.

Spring and Summer Benefits Continuation for GSIs, GSSAs, and GSRAs

If you are a GEO member or a GSRA and were enrolled in benefits during the previous fall and the current winter terms, you are eligible for university contributions during the spring/summer terms.

If you are a GEO member or a GSRA, you are participating in any U-M benefit plans during the winter term (Term II), and you will be re-employed for the following fall term (Term I) with a one-quarter or greater employment fraction, benefits may continue during spring/summer term (Term III).

To ensure continuation of your benefits, your department must confirm your eligible Term I appointment in writing with the Benefits Office by April 10. The cost of your benefits will be charged to your Winter Term II department/unit.

Review your April pay stub to see if benefits premiums have been deducted for the summer.
