Ombuds Offices
Faculty Ombuds Office
The Office of the University Faculty Ombuds is a confidential, impartial, informal, and independent resource for information and assistance to faculty members. It helps in resolving academic and administrative problems and disputes through procedures that may be preferable to a formal grievance or judicial proceedings. In addition to the University Faculty Ombuds, each School or College has a Unit Ombuds who is also available as a source of unit-based information concerning University policies and for assistance in the resolution of disputes.
Staff Ombuds Office
The Staff Ombuds Office offers free and confidential conflict management services to help non-bargained-for UM-Ann Arbor and Michigan Medicine staff resolve issues and promote a civil and positive working environment. Services include individual assessments and options, communication and conflict coaching, group facilitation, department presentations and regular feedback to campus leaders regarding systemic issues.
ADA Coordinator at the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office
The ADA Coordinator in the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office (ECRT) is available to consult with you about reasonable accommodations for staff and faculty experiencing mental health conditions. Employees can also request the ADA Coordinator’s assistance in working to resolve accommodation issues. Access the Disability Equity Office’s online request system for more information and to seek guidance.
Human Resources Consultation at U-M
At the University of Michigan, there are several categories of HR representatives available for consultation. To ensure you're speaking with the most appropriate representative, follow these steps:
-
Consult your supervisor. Begin by discussing with your supervisor to determine whether you should consult your department’s internal HR representative or another HR service at U-M. Understanding the protocol specific to your office will help guide this decision.
-
Learn about HR Services. Familiarize yourself with the different HR services available:
- Internal Unit HR: Most departments have their own HR personnel who can provide guidance on departmental matters.
- Central HR Services: Depending on your needs, you may consult:
- Michigan Medicine HR
- Staff HR Services
- Academic HR
- Office of Clinical Affairs
-
Follow office protocol. Because guidelines vary, ensure you adhere to your department's protocols when determining the appropriate HR representative to contact. This might involve additional discussion with your supervisor or administrative head.
