The Healthier Choices: Nutrition and Movement Basics virtual course series provides you with tips and strategies to improve your nutrient intake while managing food resources and budget. 

You’ll learn:

  • Basic cooking skills

  • How to stretch your food dollar

  • Food safety 

  • How to read nutrition facts labels

  • How to move your body in a way that is enjoyable

The Healthier Choices intervention is used with express permission of University of Kentucky Family and Consumer Sciences Extension. This material was developed with funds provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -Education (SNAP-Ed) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). 

What You’ll Learn:

Healthier Choices includes six virtual courses:

  • Shifting to Healthier Choices: Explore different food groups and their benefits. You will also learn tips for making nutrient-dense choices within each food group.

  • Affordable Meals: Learn how meal planning can help you stretch your food dollar, find new ways to save money and get tips for staying within your budget at the grocery store.

  • Cooking Basics: Learn how to properly measure and cut ingredients in your recipes for the best results. You’ll also review various cooking terms found in recipes and get cooking tips for different food groups.

  • Reading Food Labels: Discover how to use the Nutrition Facts Label to help you make better food choices for your health.

  • Movement: Explore the many benefits of moving your body and realize how certain ways of thinking could be barriers to moving more.

  • Food Safety: Learn how to clean hands, surfaces and produce and properly cook and store food to reduce risk of food-borne illness.

Who’s Eligible

You must meet the following requirements to participate in this program:

  • Full-time benefits-eligible faculty and staff member

  • Earn $55,600 or less per year

Please note: Participants can participate once per calendar year in Healthier Choices.

Register anytime for Healthier Choices: Nutrition and Movement Basics. Complete courses at your own pace – each course takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
