Consider three unexpected changes, write down opportunities they created to improve or restructure a process.
Coach a rising leader through a time sensitive stretch assignment. Support them in breaking the assignment into chunks with deadlines and expectations.
Check in with colleagues outside of your department and ask them about recent changes or upcoming changes in their department or unit. How are they responding to it? Ask them or help them to brainstorm the positive aspects of the change.
Brainstorm possible risks, obstacles, and best case scenarios with a working group or committee when developing a project plan.
Attend one university sponsored event per semester that highlights different cultures and practices than your own. See Happening@Michigan for opportunities.
Assemble a team of cross-functional colleagues across your unit to determine root causes of a talent-related problem (e.g., high turnover), and facilitate steps to address it.
Ask people from outside of U-M about projects and initiatives of interest. They may offer perspectives and ideas that you can introduce to the university.
Ask clarifying questions to clear up ambiguities.
