Member Guidelines for UH South Wellness Center


  • Use of the Wellness Center is at your own risk.
  • Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
  • The UH South Wellness Center is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
  • Memberships to the UH South Wellness Center are for active Michigan Medicine faculty and staff.
    • Only Wellness Center members are authorized to use the equipment and stretching/group exercise rooms. The exception is if someone has registered for MHealthy Exercise and Relaxation Classes.  
    • Please do not allow access of unauthorized groups or individuals for everyone’s safety.
  • Medical emergencies: Dial 999 from any house phone (The Wellness Center is room F8530).  In addition, please report all emergencies and injures by emailing [email protected] or contacting Eric Breitenbeck at x59790.
  • For safety, privacy and courtesy reasons, cell phone calls are not permitted on any strength/cardio equipment. Please use the touchdown room (F8674) or the corridors to make and receive calls.     
  • Food is prohibited. Beverages must be in a non-spill drinking container.
  • If listening to music or watching videos, headphones must be worn at all times.
  • The Wellness Center door should remain locked at all times. Do not prop the door open.


  • Proper attire is required. 
    • Shirts and shoes are required (no bare feet or socks permitted).
    • Athletic shoes are required to use the equipment. Street shoes (boots, dirty shoes, open-toe shoes, etc.) are not permitted when using exercise equipment.   
    • Please make sure your athletic shoes are clean and dry.
  • The Wellness Center is a perfume- and fragrance-free facility (per UMHHC Policy 04-06-008).

Equipment Use:

  • There is a 30-minute time limit on aerobic/cardiovascular machines during busy/peak times.
  • Return all equipment, plates and dumbbells to their racks after each use.
  • Keep the rooms clean and orderly.
  • Wipe down equipment after each use (gym wipes provided).
  • Be considerate of others waiting to use the machines. 
    • Proper gym etiquette is to allow others to work in for a set while you rest.
    • Avoid sitting on equipment you are not using, especially during peak gym hours.
  • Remain in control of weights at all times - do not drop dumbbells or slam weights. 
  • All equipment must stay in the Wellness Center and be returned to the proper location.
  • Inspect equipment for damage before use. If damaged, DO NOT USE and immediately call x59790 and leave a message about the piece of equipment (including the type of equipment and its inventory number).  


  • Lockers with programmable locks are available. 
  • Lockers are available for use only while using the Wellness Center.  Items must be removed daily.
  • Lockers automatically unlock after 3 hours.  Please do not leave your items in the locker if you are not using the wellness center.
  • MHealthy and U-M are not responsible for lost or stolen valuables, keys or any other personal items; be sure to secure your belongings.
  • If you are locked out of your locker, please see the Wellness Center staff member on duty. If a Wellness Center staff member is not available, please call maintenance: dial 65054 from a house phone to reach an operator. IMPORTANT:  If your call does not connect with an operator, follow these steps: 1) please leave a voicemail and 2) call back in 5 minutes.


  • No personal property may be kept in the shower room at any time.
  • Please leave shower room clean and orderly.
  • Towel service will be provided.  Please place soiled towels in the proper bin when done.
  • Please be considerate of others waiting to use the showers.

Personal Items:

  • Do not leave personal items unattended. Bags, coats and other personal belongings are to be kept in the locker room. U-M accepts no responsibility for lost or stolen articles.
  • Personal exercise equipment is not allowed in the Wellness Center.
  • Items left behind in the Wellness Center should be turned into the Michigan Medicine lost and found office. To follow up on lost items, please email[email protected] or call 734-647-8448
  • Gym apparel left behind will be turned in to lost and found.

Membership Payment: 

  • Memberships cannot be transferred between or to family members or friends. 
  • The membership fee is $10 per month. To activate your monthly auto renewal membership access to the Wellness Center, all users must complete the following:
  1. Create a RecTrac account
  2. Set-up a payment plan with a credit/debit card (a credit/debit card is the only method of payment accepted; payroll deduction is not available)
  3. Complete the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)/Informed Consent.
  • A re-occurring automatic withdrawal of $10 will occur on the 5th day of each month until membership is canceled.
  • Membership may be canceled at any time. Please note that once the membership is charged at the beginning of the month, the member will remain active through the end of the month. There are no refunds or partial refunds given. The member must cancel at least one business day prior to the end of the month to avoid charges for the subsequent month.
  • To cancel a membership: email MHealthy at [email protected] asking that your membership be canceled.
    • Phone calls or verbal communication are not considered a formal request for cancellation.
  • If your credit card expires and/or you receive a new card, please remember to update your info on your Wellness Center account.   If your information is not updated within 5 business days of receiving a late payment email notification, your access will be terminated.
    • IMPORTANT:  If your membership is cancelled for non-payment, you will be added back to the end of the waitlist for a membership opportunity. 
  • If you leave the University of Michigan and/or relocate to another area that makes you ineligible for a UH South Wellness Center membership, you MUST cancel your membership in order to stop payments on your credit card.
