What to Expect When Contacting the Michigan Medicine Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience

We’re glad you’ve made the decision to reach out for support and resources. Seeking help is a sign of strength and a commitment to your health and well-being. We’re pleased to share that OCWR services are named in U-M SPG 201.14, which allows you to schedule your first appointment during work hours with supervisor approval.

Our compassionate administrative support team welcomes your call or email to get connected. We will ask you a few questions to get the process started, and upon receiving that information, we will skillfully determine the best first service for you. You may be scheduled for a counseling intake appointment, a brief service, or a leader consultation based on your specific needs. Additionally, we can help connect you to one of our Michigan Medicine or U-M partners, if that team’s scope of service can better address your concerns.

All of our services are available at no-cost and are completely confidential; we use an internal electronic health record that is only accessible to OCWR staff.

Counseling Intake Appointments

If you are scheduled for a counseling intake appointment, you will complete a brief intake packet prior to your first visit. The majority of our community appreciates the convenience and flexibility of Zoom appointments. In-person visits can also be arranged. Your initial appointment will last 50-60 minutes, during which you can expect:

  • You and your counselor will discuss the issues that bring you to counseling.

  • Your counselor will ask thoughtful questions to gather relevant history and background to gain an understanding of you as a whole person.

  • At the end of your assessment, you and your counselor will collaboratively discuss and determine goals and the most helpful next steps for your care, which may include continuing short-term counseling at OCWR and/or referrals to community resources.

  • In many cases, faculty and staff who are interested in longer-term care find it helpful to engage in short-term counseling at OCWR while their counselor assists with connecting them to a community provider.

Brief Supportive Conversations

If you are scheduled for a brief service, a counselor will either call you by phone or meet via Zoom for about 20-30 minutes to discuss what resources or services you may need related to your concerns. If you are unsure of what you need or about counseling in general, a brief service may be the best place to start.

Leader Consultations

Michigan Medicine supervisors, managers, and leaders who are scheduled for a leader consultation will be connected with a member of our team to discuss the issue you are facing and provide guidance and assistance with any next steps. Additional information on leader consultations can be found at Leader Consultation.
