Getting Started

1. Take an interactive survey

You’ll answer questions about your healthcare needs, family situation, finances and future plans. The survey generally takes 10 minutes or less to complete. Every question in the survey has a purpose. Your answers help Upwise understand your situation and make recommendations based on those answers. The more context you provide, the better it can match you with the right plans.

You may be asked about topics such as:

Who you expect to cover under your benefits
Your anticipated use of healthcare services
Prescription drug needs
Your financial preferences
Other benefit needs and priorities

2. Review your personalized recommendation

Upwise provides data-driven, personalized recommendations based on the information you provide, benefits available to you, and applicable plan costs.

Understanding Your Recommendation

A recommendation is not a guarantee of your actual expenses or future healthcare needs. Your costs may vary based on the services you receive, the providers you use, changes in your health and other circumstances.

You should review your recommendation alongside the information available on U-M benefits web pages, including:

Employee contribution rates
Deductibles, copays and coinsurance
Provider networks
Prescription drug coverage
Coverage rules and exclusions
Eligibility requirements
Official plan documents

3. Make your benefit elections

Use your recommendation as one source of information when reviewing your benefit choices. Additional resources are available on U-M Benefits and Wellness web pages, as well. You remain responsible for deciding which benefits are right for you and your eligible dependents.

Upwise Does Not Enroll You in Benefits

Using Upwise does not create, change or submit a benefit election.

After reviewing your Upwise recommendation, follow the university’s enrollment instructions to make your elections. Your benefits will not change unless you submit your elections successfully through the official U-M enrollment process during Open Enrollment or a Life Event enrollment election.

Privacy and Security

Upwise uses the information you provide, along with benefits plan eligibility and benefits rates, to develop your personalized recommendations. All data is encrypted and handled according to the highest industry privacy and security standards. Your individual survey responses and recommendations are not available to the university or used to make employment decisions. Your data will not be sold or shared with third parties.

Before entering your information, review the Upwise privacy notice and terms of use. Upwise is a benefits decision-support platform owned by MetLife, a trusted partner in administering U-M benefits. Its decision-support and benefits-engagement software is fully powered and developed by Nayya Health, Inc. Your use of Upwise is subject to Nayya’s applicable Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

Upwise does not provide medical, legal, tax, investment, or financial advice.
Upwise recommendations are based on information available to the platform and voluntary user responses.
Not every U-M benefit or individual circumstance may be considered.
Participation does not guarantee eligibility for a benefit.
If information in Upwise differs from official U-M plan documents, the official plan documents prevail.
You must complete enrollment separately through the official U-M enrollment process in Wolverine Access.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Upwise receive my personal data?: The University of Michigan Benefits Office provides benefits eligibility and benefit rates to Upwise through its contract with MetLife, a trusted benefits partner. All other information is provided by the employee. You control what and how much information is shared with Upwise.
How does Upwise handle my personal data?: Upwise safeguards all information in accordance with applicable laws and pursuant to robust security standards. All personal data is handled in accordance with the privacy policy. Upwise will never sell your private data.
The tool is called Upwise; why do I see references to Nayya?: Upwise is a benefits experience platform owned by MetLife, but its decision support and benefits engagement software is fully powered and developed by Nayya Health, Inc.
If I update my personal data in Upwise, will U-M also receive the information?: When you update your personal data in the Upwise tool, it applies only to Upwise. Changes will not be recorded in your U-M records. To update your address or contact details with U-M, log into Wolverine Access.
How do I know if my preferred doctors and facilities are in U-M health plan networks?: Upwise uses a third-party vendor to see if your preferred provider is in a plan’s network. Before enrolling in a new health plan, check the provider directory to make sure it includes a doctor and hospital of your choice. You can find provider information by using the participating provider directory or calling the health plan’s customer service number. You will not be able to change plans mid-year due to a physician’s or hospital’s disaffiliation with your health plan.
Why does Upwise use GoodRx on its prescription drug page?: Upwise does not use the U-M prescription drug formulary; instead, drug names are sourced from GoodRx to simplify name selection and dosage. The average drug cost provided is used in combination with other survey questions to build health plan recommendations.
Do I have to enroll in the benefits plan that Upwise suggests?: No. Upwise recommendations do not lock you into an enrollment selection. The purpose of this tool is to provide information so you can compare U-M’s plans to make an informed decision about recommended options. If you wish to change your benefits plan, you must enroll in that plan during the standard Open Enrollment period in October, in response to an eligible life event or when you become newly eligible.
It looks like some health plans are not options for me. Why not?: Eligibility for some health plans is limited to specific geographic areas. If you live outside the residency area for a health plan, the plan is not an option.
My address displayed in Upwise is not correct. What should I do to correct it?: Please follow the steps below to review and update your address in Wolverine Access:
1. Go to Wolverine Access. 2. Select the “Employee Self-Service” tile.
3. Click “Campus Personal Information.” 4. Click “Review Addresses.”
5. If a change is needed, click the pencil icon next to the address type you wish to change and make the necessary edit. Once complete, select the “OK” button. 6. Review “Current Local” address and edit if needed.
I currently live in Canada. Why is my zip code not populated in Upwise?: Currently, non-USA zip codes do not populate in Upwise.
When I change my salary in Upwise, my health plan rates do not change. Why?: Health plan premiums are calculated based on information provided to Upwise by the university. Manually adjusting your salary and adding additional income outside the university allow Upwise to determine what health plans and life insurance rates are most affordable, but do not adjust your health plan rates. Use the Health Plan Rate Estimator to see how an appointment or salary change might impact your monthly health plan premiums.
Can I access Upwise outside the normal Open Enrollment period?: Yes. You can access Upwise any time. However, you will be able to make a change only during the annual Open Enrollment period, after certain life events or if you become newly eligible. New employees also have access to Upwise.
How do I access Upwise?: To use Upwise, go to Wolverine Access and enter “Upwise” in the search field.
