What better time to take focus on your well-being than May 21, Employee Health and Fitness Day. Nationally recognized on the third Wednesday in May, it celebrates the benefits of health and well-being in the workplace.

Here are seven ways you can care for yourself on May 21 and beyond:

Make mental health a priority

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a good reminder to pay attention and take care of your mental and emotional needs. Explore the many resources to support your mind and mood – from simple breathing exercises to exploring nature, to connecting with friends.

Experiences in nature can also help cultivate wonder and well-being. Take a nature break on May 21 at “A Breath of Fresh Air” guided nature experience in the W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden. Practice mindful attention and appreciation for the natural environment and learn how to refresh your energy and reduce stress by being outside.

If you (or someone you know) could use extra support, confidential online screenings, professional counseling at no charge and presentations and events are also always available to you.

Get moving

Movement is good for your body and mind. Take a walk, stretch your muscles or get moving in an in-person MHealthy physical activity class. Registration is open for the spring/summer session and classes start the week of May 12.

Can't make an in-person class? No problem – join an MHealthy class from the comfort of your own space, at a time that works best for you! Watch recorded classes in the MHealthy Physical Activity Library on MiVideo.

Boost your financial know-how

Financial well-being is an important part of your overall well-being. In 2025, managing personal finances is more challenging than ever. It’s a balancing act – making good decisions today, while knowing you also have to plan for the future. From inflation and interest rates to investing risks and financial fraud, countless factors impact your money.

MHealthy’s 2025 My Money Matters Workshop series kicks off on May 22 with “Level Up Your Finances: Eight Winning Plays for 2025.” Led by U-M Credit Union experts, this workshop will highlight eight strategies to help boost your financial wellness now, with clear and actionable steps to build towards a bright financial future.

If starting a savings plan for your child’s future college education is a priority, join Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) in a live webinar on May 27, 12-1 p.m. It’s an opportunity to learn about the state of Michigan’s direct-sold 529 programs, paying for college, potential tax benefits for Michigan residents and more.

Do a skin check

May is also Skin Cancer Awareness Month. More skin cancers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year than all other cancers combined. However, when found and treated early, skin cancer can almost always be cured. Look over your skin, preferably at least once a month. Use these tips and resources to check and protect your skin.

Enjoy a nutritious meal

Enjoying a healthy meal doesn’t have to be boring, time-consuming or expensive. Explore MHealthy’s website to find recipes, free cooking classes, videos and more nutrition-related resources.

Michigan farmers' crops are also bountiful this time of year. Visit your local farmers market or consider signing up for a produce box subscription for a convenient way to get seasonal produce from Michigan. MHealthy has partnered with Argus Farm Stop to offer pick-up locations on or near campus. The cost is $30 per week.

Check in on your alcohol consumption

With warmer weather comes more opportunities to enjoy time with friends and family at outdoor parties, barbeques or the beach. Sometimes, alcohol is included. As you enjoy the season, remember to check-in with your relationship with alcohol. Use these resources to raise your awareness and practice safer drinking habits.

Become tobacco free

Quitting tobacco is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you are thinking about quitting, you don’t have to do it alone. On May 21, attend “Thinking About Quitting Tobacco Workshop,” a 30-minute virtual session from the MHealthy Tobacco Consultation Service (TCS). It's an opportunity to meet a tobacco treatment specialist and learn about tools and resources available when you are ready to take the first step.

TCS has also partnered with the American Lung Association to offer Freedom From Smoking®. This free, seven-week group program helps you develop a plan of action that leads to your quit day. You’ll also get the support you need to remain tobacco-free for life. A new session starts on June 18.
