According to a recent survey by the Adoption Institute, approximately 60 percent of Americans know someone who has been adopted, has adopted a child, or who has relinquished a child for adoption. In 1992, the last year national adoption figures were gathered, the National Center for State Courts estimated that 127,000 children were adopted in this country (including international adoptions).
