About AFSCME

Approximately 2,600 university employees on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses and Michigan Medicine are members of AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees) Local 1583. They play an important role supporting the university’s education, research and patient care missions through a variety of work, predominantly in the areas of service, maintenance and patient care.

Employees represented by AFSCME receive generous health care benefits, including low cost prescription drug coverage and copays for medical care, retirement savings plans with a 2-to-1 matching employer contribution, paid time off, as well as seniority and job security rights.

A new contract was ratified June 21, 2017.

Supervisor's Guide to Performance Management for AFSCME Employees

The Leadership Collaboration Group has developed a guide for supervisors of staff who are covered by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. The document was created to provide support to supervisors and to encourage consistent practices across the university.

The document is accessible to AFSCME supervisors and requires logging in with your U-M account.
