Through a leadership committee or a university task force, oversee a needs assessment for forming a Community of Practice in a particular area of leadership. and learn the steps to create one that is either based on in-person interactions or one of U-M's Workplace platforms.

Think of a leader you admire. Reflect upon how that leader demonstrates value for his or her diverse stakeholders and how you can adjust your behaviors or actions to better demonstrate your values.

The next time you receive outstanding service, write down how that sounded and looked, and choose one or two of those practices to incorporate in your job. Inform a colleague who can hold you accountable.

Teach a new hire or intern a unique process that they must understand and follow for their job.

Take time to actively listen to stakeholders, pausing before responding.

Take on a task working with team members in a different country, requiring you to communicate across borders, cultures, and time zones.

Support direct reports who need to make customer service improvements by offering guidance and resources. Provide constructive feedback.

Stay up to date by joining a professional organization and attending functions or reading it's materials.

Solicit advice from peers outside of your team about ways that they create an inclusive work environment.

Share your unit's successful customer service practices with another unit.
