Work restrictions for respiratory viral illness

It is important for team members with respiratory symptoms to know when they should stay home from work or mask for the safety of patients and co-workers.

Team members who have symptoms concerning for influenza or COVID-19 should get tested. Symptoms of influenza or COVID-19 can include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, cough, nasal congestion, and sore throat.

Illness Work Restrictions
Confirmed influenza or COVID-19

Stay home for 3 days after onset of symptoms.

Return to work after 3 days as long as at least 24 hours have passed since last fever and other symptoms are improving. A negative test is not required to return to work.

After returning to work, wear a mask at all times until 7 days after symptom onset and avoid caring for patients in protective precautions during that time.

Other respiratory illness with fever and cough

Stay home until fever has resolved for at least 24 hours and other symptoms are improving.

After returning to work, wear a mask at all times until 7 days after symptom onset and avoid caring for patients in protective precautions during that time.

Other respiratory illness without fever and cough

You may continue to work and should wear a mask at all times while symptomatic.

Avoid caring for patients in protective precautions until symptoms resolve.

Exposure to someone with respiratory illness, including influenza or COVID-19

There is no need to be off work following an exposure.

You should monitor for symptoms and follow the guidance outlined above if symptoms occur.
