Librarian, Archivist and Curator Appointments - Regular and Term
Every position in the bargaining unit shall be classified as either a "term appointment" or a "regular appointment".
- Term appointments: limited to a temporary project of defined scope, an externally funded sponsored project, a pilot with a predetermined endpoint, or a limited early career development opportunity or fellowship.
- Term appointments may not exceed 7% of the bargaining unit at any time. Please consult AHR prior to posting any term-limited Librarian, Archivist, and Curator appointments.
- Regular appointments: all full-time and part-time Librarians, Archivists, and Curators.
Librarians, Archivists, or Curators Who Supervises other LACs
Determinations as to whether or not specific roles and duties might exclude a Librarian, Archivist, or Curator from the LEO-GLAM bargaining unit require careful analysis. Please contact Academic Human Resources, or the Offices of Human Resources in Dearborn and Flint, with specific questions about whether a LAC should be excluded from the bargaining unit due to their supervisory duties.
Posting, Hiring, and Notification
All LAC appointment opportunities must be posted on the University’s Human Resources website for a minimum of ten (10) days. All members of the LEO-GLAM bargaining unit, including those on layoff, must be notified of all LAC appointment opportunities. Please see Article XX of the collective bargaining agreement for more information for detailed information on job postings.
Job posting requirements may be waived in the following circumstances and subject to Academic Human Resources’ approval in advance:
-
If the unit intends to recall a laid-off LAC;
-
If the unit fills an open position from the ranks of current LACs; and
-
If the posting would interfere with the need for timely hiring decisions, in unusual circumstances, or if otherwise provided for in the contract.
New Hire Employee Union Meeting
LEO-GLAM may meet with newly hired LACs for 45 minutes during the Employee’s regular work hours, provided there is no undue interference to Department and/or school/college operations.
Appointment Letters
Article XX: Posting, Hiring, and Notifications of the LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement outlines the required information for appointment letters. Unit leaders should review these requirements before issuing any appointment letters.
Professional Development Funds
Professional development activities undertaken by Librarians, Archivists, and Curators may require financial commitments, at the discretion of the unit, to cover costs related to achieving professional and personal growth.
Please see LEO-GLAM contract Article XIX for detailed information about professional development funds.
Promotion Process
LACs’ participation in the promotion process is voluntary but highly encouraged. Choosing not to undergo a promotion does not prejudice the annual performance appraisal and is considered in future promotion reviews. LACs are eligible for promotion review in rank after five years in their current rank, or earlier with unit approval. Please see LEO-GLAM contract Article XII for detailed information about the promotion process.
