Attend an event with a speaker. Notice the degree to which the message is inspirational. If so, create a list of the inspirational attributes for the next message that you compose.

Attend a U-M event about a topic that you are curious about. Participate in a question and answer session if there is one.

Attend a function pertaining to a controversy. Try to listen to understand the different perspectives. Listen to the words, use your eyes to read body language, and your heart to gauge the emotion conveyed.

Attend a storytelling event or listen to a storytelling podcast or radio show to expose yourself to compelling narratives.

At staff meetings, highlight one or two ways in which the people, resources, programs, and/or projects execute your unit's mission and values. Include any collaboration across university units or organizations outside of the university.

Ask your mentor about their successful strategies to facilitate conflict resolution and strengthen relationships.

Ask you supervisor about the reasoning behind a decision to assign you a particular assignment.

Ask to participate on a hiring committee for your group.

Ask someone who did not speak up in a meeting to share their thoughts with you afterward. Listen, make eye contact, reflect on their perspective before commenting.

Ask questions to better understand the feelings of a friend or family member who seeks advice from you.
