Set the tone for inclusive and respectful communication within your unit by establishing clear expectations, stressing the importance of expressing and listening to diverse perspectives.

Serve as an onboarding buddy for a new hire. Periodically ask if they have any questions.

Seek a mentor with a different background than you.

Request to write an article for your unit's magazine or newsletter.

Request to manage part of an unpopular endeavor.

Request feedback from people with different perspectives than you about a product that you are submitting or a service that you provide.

Repeat the directions that someone gives you, and ask if you heard correctly.

Read Crucial Confrontations. Then with your supervisor or member of the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office, practice holding a difficult conversation pertaining to a current conflict within your team.

Recommend point people ("Responsible Employees") who can assist others to resolve conflict.
