201.92 Tenure Probationary Period: Effects on Tenure Clock of Childbearing and Dependent Care Responsibilities

Procedures for requests based on childbearing

Faculty member:

  1. Submit written request to appropriate dean (or to the provost's office at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint).
  2. Forward informational copy to appropriate department chair, where applicable, or to the provost's office at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint.

Dean's Office (or Provost's Office at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint):

In writing, acknowledge to the faculty member his or her request, confirm that the exclusion will be granted, and advise the faculty member of the date on which his or her tenure review will be initiated.

Dean's Office (or Provost's Office at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint):

  1. Forward copies of requests and acknowledgments to the Office of Academic Human Resources.
  2. Forward a copy of all requests and responses to the Office of Human Resources Records and Information Services (HRRIS) for inclusion in the faculty member's personnel record.

Procedures for requests based on dependent care needs

Faculty member:

Submit written request to relevant dean (or to Provost's Office at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint), describing dependent care situation.  Forward informational copy to appropriate department chair, where applicable (or to the appropriate dean's office at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint).

With respect to caring for one or more newly born or adopted children under the dependent care section of the policy, in the written request the faculty member should verify that during the year for which he or she is requesting the exclusion, he or will have (or has had) significant and sustained care-giving responsibility for the child (or children) as a single parent or, where there are two parents, will have (or has had) care-giving responsibility that is (or was) at least as time-consuming as the care-giving responsibility of the faculty member's spouse or partner.

Department chair or academic program director, where applicable, (or to the appropriate dean at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint):

Review request and provide written recommendation of approval or denial to the appropriate dean (or to the provost at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint).

Dean's Office (or Provost's Office at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint):

  1. Acknowledge request in writing, provide decision, and, if approving the request, advise faculty member of the date on which his or her tenure review will be initiated.
  2. Forward a copy of all requests and acknowledgments to the Office of Academic Human Resources.  
  3. Forward a copy of all requests and responses to the Office of Human Resources Records and Information Services (HRRIS) for inclusion in the faculty member's personnel record.

Office of Academic Human Resources:

Periodically review all requests and responses for University-wide consistency.  Advise the provost (or chancellor at UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint) of inconsistencies and recommended actions.
