201.40 Termination of Employment

Termination is the generic term for the ending of the employment relationship at the initiative of the staff member or the University for any reason, including misconduct. A misconduct termination, however, is usually referred to as a discharge.  

Termination of employment at the employee’s initiative.

Employee

  • Should provide written notice (such as hand-written note, email, text message) of intent to leave university employment, including proposed last day of employment. Notice should be provided to the appropriate department administrator.  
  • Resignation - Termination of employment at the employee’s initiative with at least two (2) weeks written notice and the employee works through the effective date of resignation.
  • Quit - Termination of employment at the employee’s initiative without two (2) weeks notice or having given two (2) weeks notice, the employee fails to work through the effective date.

Department

  • Confirm receipt of the employee’s notice of resignation.
  • Process the termination via termination workflow. Include the employee’s written notice as supporting documentation.
