201.11-1 Sick Pay Income Plan -- Academic Appointments

Procedure A: Requesting sick leave income and reporting time

Faculty Member or designee:

If the period of inability to work has exceeded or will exceed 10 calendar days, notify department chair, academic program director, or dean and open a claim with Work Connections.

Department chair, academic program director, or dean (or designee):

  1. Review disability status update email from Work Connections to determine whether the faculty member is eligible for sick leave.
  2. If sick leave is approved by the unit, notify the faculty member, manually track extended sick time and modify the appointment if/when needed. Contact Academic Human Resources with policy questions and the Shared Services Center with transactional questions.
    1. Extended Sick Time Five-year Look-back: For each incident of inability to work, look back five years to determine how much (if any) extended sick time has been used.
      1. No extended sick time used = full balance available
      2. Some extended sick time used but not all = remaining balance at time of current inability to work available
      3. Exhausted all extended sick time = balance renews when no extended sick time is used for five years

Procedure B: Returning to work 

Faculty Member:

  1. Upon medical clearance from the appropriate provider, as validated by Work Connections, contact department chair, academic program director, or dean to discuss a return to work plan including the accommodation of any restrictions.  

Department chair, academic program director, or dean (or designee):

Upon medical clearance from the appropriate provider, as validated by Work Connections, discuss the return to work plan with the faculty member including the accommodation of any restrictions. Modify the appointment if needed. 

Contact Academic Human Resources with policy questions, the Disability Equity Office with accommodations questions and the Shared Services Center with transactional questions.
