The University of Michigan has received the 2025 C. Everett Koop National Health Innovation Award for introducing significant innovations in workplace well-being. The award recognizes MHealthy's Resource Coach Program for addressing factors beyond individual health behaviors that influence overall health outcomes.

MHealthy launched the Resource Coach Program in 2020 to connect U-M employees experiencing financial crises or personal hardships to both university and community services. Dedicated resource coaches help participants navigate critical challenges like transportation, utilities and housing, working to ensure stability at work and well-being.

“Our goal is to ensure every employee feels supported and empowered, not just as a colleague but as a person,” says Bri Carpenter, social determinants of health program manager for MHealthy. “Each action plan is tailored to the individual and by working together, we’re able to fully support our colleagues and break down barriers to well-being.”

The program efforts have expanded to include food security supports, financial well-being programs and physical activity program scholarships. In some cases, it also provides financial assistance, through mini-grants and the Emergency Hardship Program, for qualified employees.

“You made me feel human and valued”

The Koop Innovation Award honors organizations that are redefining the future of workforce health and well-being. To be considered, organizations are required to have at least one year of documented results demonstrating both improved health outcomes and organizational benefits.

Results for the Resource Coach Program have shown a positive impact, with 93% of participants being satisfied with the program and 90% reporting that due to the program, they experienced a decrease in the impact that one of their unmet critical needs had on their life. The program has also contributed to a significant decrease in ER visit and cost trends among participants compared to non-participants.

The program’s impact is also reflected in the words of one participant, who shared: "You listened to me and you were so empathetic with me. You made me feel human and valued. You may not get to see the smile on our faces, but know for sure that everything you all have done has made a tremendous impact on our lives."
