The U-M community has access to free cessation programs as the university approaches its tobacco-free effective date Thursday, Nov. 17.

As you prepare for this step – or just start thinking about it – remember that the university offers group sessions, personal coaching, nicotine replacement therapy and more to help ease your cessation journey.

Policy Effective November 17

The updated Tobacco-Free University Premises policy takes effect Thursday, Nov. 17, in correlation with the Great American Smokeout. This update of 2011’s Smoking on University Premises policy will prohibit the use of the following additional products in university buildings, facilities and grounds, and in university vehicles:

  • electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) items, such as vapes, e-cigarettes, e-cigars, hookah pens and vape pens

  • smokeless tobacco products, commonly called dip, chew, snus and snuff

Traditional cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos and hookahs will continue to be prohibited. The policy allows exceptions for research and cultural functions with appropriate approval.

Where to Get Help

Faculty, staff and retirees should contact the Tobacco Consultation Service at (734) 998-6222 for free cessation assistance. Students may receive help from Wolverine Wellness coaches.

View the Tobacco Consultation Service webpages for information about this week's Great American Smokeout, a Virtual Quit Kit and more no-cost resources.

Temporary Signage to Come

Temporary signage will be erected in parking lots, public venues and bus stops in coming weeks. In addition, temporary signage will be adhered to buildings on all campuses except Michigan Health facilities.

In the near future, a self-service signage function will be provided in the "Supervisor's Toolkit" page of tobaccofree.umich.edu. Using this function, building managers can order signage for areas where more communication is needed. Watch UHR News for information.
