Summer is a time when routines change a bit for many. Some of us take a break from work, while others spend more time outdoors enjoying the longer days and warmer weather.
This season is also when International Self-Care Day is observed on July 24. One great way to care for yourself is to strengthen connections with the people around you. Building positive relationships is essential for our well-being, but it is not always easy to do in the busy pace of life. This summer—and in every season—consider setting an intention to connect and build community.
Connecting with others doesn’t have to involve grand gestures. Simple actions can be meaningful and help build relationships over time. “Relationships grow with care and attention, and connection is a skill that we can always practice,” says Kelcey Stratton, Ph.D., Chief Behavioral Health Strategist, UHR. “Intentional daily actions for connection can support kindness and understanding and offer opportunities for more joy.”
Easy Ways to Connect Every Day
Share Gratitude
Expressing gratitude can increase joy and appreciation. Take time to thank the people in your life.
Acknowledge Others
Greeting other people–even those whom you might encounter casually–is a way of recognizing and honoring their presence. Try greeting people by name in your work office, saying hello to neighbors, or briefly chatting with other people you meet in the course of your daily routines. These encounters can also be unexpected opportunities for joy and positivity.
Send a Message
Try sending a quick text, email, or phone call to someone you know and care about. Your message might be a simple “thinking of you,” or an offer to connect for conversation.
Meet Up
Busy schedules might require planning. Invite someone in your life to join you for any activity– perhaps to spend some time outside, share a snack or meal, or simply chat.
Boost Positive Experiences
Ask people about the good things happening in their lives, and share in their happiness by asking open-ended questions. Focus your attention on the other person and practice curiosity about their positive experiences. You might find that you will also receive a positive boost by sharing in their joy!
This summer, make the most of the opportunities to connect and enjoy the happiness and sense of community that comes from building and maintaining these relationships.
