Keep Your Retirement Accounts Secure

Fidelity Investments and TIAA, U-M’s trusted partners in administering its retirement savings plans, continue to offer new, proactive tools to protect your accounts.

Strong Logins: Passwords and User IDs

Your user ID and password are your first line of defense. Use strong, unique combinations. Don’t reuse old passwords, and change them regularly—especially if you believe they’ve been compromised. If you suspect someone else may know your login credentials, change them immediately and contact Fidelity or TIAA.

Use Your Voice as Protection

  • TIAA’s Voice Biometrics uses your natural voice patterns for authentication. The voiceprint is encrypted and cannot be used for other systems. Contact the TIAA Automated Telephone System (ATS) – 800-842-2252 for more information.

  • Fidelity’s MyVoice℠ confirms your identity during phone calls through natural conversation. A voiceprint is unique to you, like a fingerprint. When you call Fidelity, the representative will invite you to enroll. Contact Fidelity at 800-343-0860 for more information.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  • Fidelity enables two-factor authentication by requiring a security code at login, in addition to your password. Learn more about Fidelity two-factor authentication

  • If you have a Fidelity account separate from your U-M plan, such as an IRA, Fidelity offers VIP Access by Symantec, a soft token app that generates a random code to use when signing in. Call Fidelity at 800-544-6666 or visit the website to learn more.

Stay Updated and Monitor Activity

It is your responsibility to keep your personal information current with TIAA and Fidelity—especially after major life events like marriage, divorce, or moving. You should periodically verify that your personal information is up-to-date, such as your name, mailing address, email, or beneficiary information. Contact TIAA and Fidelity directly to submit a change.

Review all communications—like quarterly statements, tax documents, or confirmation notices of transactions (e.g., withdrawals, address changes, or password resets). Report any suspicious or inaccurate activity immediately.
