The Intersection of Disability and Performance Challenges: A Guide for Supervisors and HR Professionals New!

This presentation will explore how employee performance concerns intersect with other identities. We will show the interactive process and how it leads to successful performance conversations. You will examine how:

  • Workplace accommodations can influence performance outcomes
  • To thoughtfully balance performance-related conversations with accommodation discussions
  • Key stakeholders contribute to an effective and equitable process

We will use a case analysis to show how you can use this process in the workplace. We will also clarify key roles and responsibilities. Join us to ask questions, share perspectives and engage in meaningful conversations.

You will learn to:

  • Identify U-M resources and support for employees and supervisors
  • Determine how accommodations, essential job functions and performance standards fit together
  • Apply consistent, objective performance management
  • Use support-focused communication and documentation in performance conversations

You will benefit by:

  • Recognizing when to engage in the interactive process
  • Obtaining resources to identify where performance concerns and accommodation requests intersect

Any U-M faculty or staff leaders who want to learn more about navigating performance concerns related to employees with disabilities

To prepare for the session, you can review Interactive Process: Determining Reasonable Workplace Accommodations. It is a 32-minute recorded workshop. This is optional.
