Change in Employment Status for You or Your Dependent

When you, or your dependent, experience a status change that results in a gain or loss of eligibility for medical coverage, you may be able to make certain adjustments to your benefits related to your status change within 30 days.

Benefit Changes Due to Your Employment Status Change

If you are newly eligible to enroll in benefits, you will receive notification that you are eligible to elect benefits online.

  • You are eligible to enroll yourself and your dependents.

If you are currently waived out of medical coverage and your appointment changes from part time to full time, you will receive notification to elect benefits online.

  • You are eligible to enroll yourself only.

  • If you are currently enrolled in benefits and your hours increase or decrease, which may cause a medical plan rate change, the following apply:

    • You are able to change your medical plan.

    • You cannot newly enroll or remove a spouse/other qualified adult (OQA) and/or dependents on your benefit coverage at this time.

If at any time your hours decrease to less than 50%, you may become ineligible for university contributions toward your health plan, life insurance, dental plan, and prescription drug benefits. For information specific to your benefit group, see the Benefits Eligibility section.

Benefit Changes Due to Your Spouse/OQA’s Employment Status Change

  • If your spouse/OQA involuntarily lost coverage, you may be able to enroll them and your eligible dependents enrolled in the plans they lost eligibility. Contact the Shared Services Center - HR Customer Care at the number below to discuss your situation.

    • If you are enrolling dependent(s) who lost coverage elsewhere, you may change your current U-M medical plan to a lower cost option.

  • If your spouse/OQA and/or dependents become newly eligible for benefits due to employment status change with their employer, you may drop them from the benefits plans on which you are covering them as a dependent. Contact the SSC - HR Customer Care at the number below to discuss your specific situation.
