Free Rapid COVID-19 Tests Still Available to Health Plan Members

U-M’s prescription drug benefit continues to cover over-the-counter rapid COVID-19 tests with no copay.

Since the federal government’s mail service program ended, you might need to purchase these tests more frequently. It’s important to remember to use your prescription drug card at the point of purchase so you'll have no out-of-pocket costs.

What’s Your Benefit?

U-M health plan members can receive up to eight FDA-approved COVID-19 antigen (rapid) tests every 30 days through their prescription drug benefit.

When the federal program began earlier this year, pharmacies were processing the benefit differently. Some accepted prescription cards at the counter with no member cost, as intended.

Others, however, required members to purchase the tests out-of-pocket. If that occurred, you had to fill out a form and send it to Magellan Rx for reimbursement.

Fewer Growing Pains

U-M has worked closely with its member pharmacies to ensure employees now receive the full federal benefit. Most pharmacies accept the university’s prescription drug card as payment with no out-of-pocket costs.

U-M found that coverage differences were not necessarily organization-wide. This means while the pharmacy on your corner was covering the tests directly, the same chain a few towns over might have required you to submit for reimbursement. These discrepancies have largely been minimized, but it’s still a good idea to call ahead if you’re going to a new or unfamiliar pharmacy.

If You Need Reimbursement…

In the unlikely event that your pharmacy charges you at the point of purchase, take these steps to be reimbursed:
