What happens when a parent or other older loved one needs support, but they live across the country? Caring for older adults is inherently challenging, made more so with distance. But there is help and this overview article from Aging Care is a good start.

"Caring for loved ones living out of town adds an additional layer of complexity.  It often comes with managing input from siblings and other family members who may be coordinating care,” says Barb Mulay, Work-Life Resource Center Manager manager. “Frequent phone and zoom-type calls do wonders for keeping you all connected. Also, you may want to contact the local Area Agency on Aging for your relative needing assistance. They often can suggest resources to help seniors remain independent.”

With the additional challenges of long-distance caregiving, you may want to look into new options for support. This article from Aging Care highlights a possible solution -  to seek out a Geriatric Care Manager(GCM). A Geriatric Care Manager is experienced in all aspects of eldercare and trained to not only assess your loved one’s needs, but yours as well.  The article contains guidance and tips for how to find and select a GCM that is right for you.
