The numbers are in about the U-M/Omada Diabetes Prevention Program! With the relaunch of the university's free Diabetes Prevention Programs approaching the one-year mark, 44 percent of Omada participants who consistently engaged in the program have achieved 3 percent or more of their target weight loss.

Breaking it down: Omada participants have lost a collective 1,473 pounds since September. And participants who completed at least nine of 16 lessons have lost an average of 3.6 percent of their body weight after six months in the program.

By the Numbers

Since the DPPs relaunched in September 2020, participants have focused on the following benefits to improve their overall health:

  • Online experience, from communication to tracking to educational lessons
  • Expertise and guidance from experienced coaches
  • Group interaction with fellow participants

Omada tracked users from September 2020 through June 2021. This translates to:

  • 223 participants, ages 18 to 60+
  • Participant engagement with the Omada program 36 times per week, on average
  • 72 percent completion of nine out of 16 educational lessons – 12 percent higher than Omada’s benchmark
  • 84 percent satisfaction rate

Omada users’ favorite tools included:

  • Interactive scale each enrollee receives after acceptance into the program
  • Educational lessons about nutrition, mental health/attitude toward self, activity and more
  • Real-time nutrition/activity tracking tools

The numbers are impressive, but participants’ successes hit a more personal note.

"Having individual attention and feedback about how I was doing, along with suggestions, has made a difference for me,” said Betsy, a participant from Northville.

“I was initially skeptical that I could lose weight, especially since I didn’t have a large amount to lose. The process is quite painless. With the tools and support from the people at Omada, you can feel confident that improved health and weight loss are possible.”

Two DPP Options

The university's two DPPs, U-M/Omada and U-M/Diabetes Prevention Center, are covered with no out-of-pocket cost to faculty, staff and retirees enrolled in U-M Health Plans and who meet eligibility criteria. Your adult dependents also are eligible.

Eligibility is based on clinical evidence of prediabetes or risk factors that place the applicant at high risk for prediabetes.
