Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026-27 Candace J. Johnson Award for Staff Excellence, recognizing staff members who demonstrate a commitment to excellence, generosity, and compassion. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.
The annual award was established in memory of Johnson, a dedicated, longtime staff member in the Office of the Provost. Honorees receive $1,500 and a recognition plaque, presented at a group reception. All regular staff members from the Ann Arbor campus and Michigan Medicine are eligible. Nominations may be submitted by colleagues, supervisors, or a combination of both.
"Each day, in every corner of campus, our staff demonstrate their value and dedication to U-M's students, patients, and countless others in the Ann Arbor community," said Provost Laurie McCauley. "I had the great fortune to work with Candy Johnson, and I am equally fortunate each year for the opportunity to discover and celebrate those who carry on her legacy."
Past honorees represent a wide range of roles embodying U-M's core values of excellence, generosity, and compassion. The award has celebrated individuals from various departments and areas of expertise, including coordinators and technical support staff as well as healthcare professionals and research administrators. Staff contribute to the campus community in myriad ways, and the Candace J. Johnson Award underscores the impact of those contributions.
Johnson was known for her pursuit of excellence and the ability to inspire and support her colleagues. After her passing, the Office of the Provost established this award to honor her work and recognized its first recipients in 2004.
