TITLE: SENIOR AUTOCLAVE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRPERSON GRADE: E6
 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

To perform or direct the performance of others on complex mechanical work on waste autoclave systems and equipment; inspect completed maintenance and installation work for quality and assure the operating integrity of the autoclave and waste stream health, safety and pollution control; and to coordinate waste management programs and initiatives.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate and perform installation, maintenance and repair work for waste autoclave, waste stream equipment including trash and recycling carts and elevators.
Inspect maintenance and installation work performed by autoclave, outside contractors and waste handlers for quality and completeness.
Coordinate and monitor all recycling and waste stream programs, including outbuildings.
Coordinate with outside contractors, the trash pulls for medical and general waste, construction containers and special pulls.
Participate in the training of employees.
Coordinate and perform project management activities for autoclave and waste stream systems upgrades and new installations.
Coordinate environmental compliance and EPA standards with autoclave and waste stream operations.
Order parts, equipment and material for autoclave and waste stream repairs.
Coordinate and set up necessary time, equipment and contractors for routine and emergency equipment shut downs and repair.
Perform waste stream incident and infection control reports and corrections, including hazardous materials situations.
Coordinate and perform functions for ground water, chemical and solid waste discharge issues.
Train individual staff and departments for proper waste disposal procedures in accordance with regulatory guidelines set by EPA, OSEH and UMHCS, DOT.
Coordinate removal of equipment and materials for disposition, including documentation for removal of equipment from capital assets, maintenance and biomed areas.
Coordinate the work of autoclave maintenance/repairpersons and waste stream handlers, or other assigned assistants.

RELATED DUTIES:

Install and maintain boiler and waste autoclave equipment, such as pumps and compressors.
Inspect autoclaves and grinders, shoots, stack, scrubbers and environmental systems for defects or wear and determine whether repair, replacement or maintenance is necessary for proper operation.
Balance, set and align plant power equipment and circuit equipment and check tightness, alignment and settings to prevent defects and wear.  
Maintain boiler, autoclave, stack, scrubbing and elevator systems and related equipment through preventative maintenance, such as replacing parts and fittings and packing and lubricating bearings.
Fabricate parts and tools by machining, cutting, welding and bending metal pipe, steel and other materials.
Dismantle, repair and install autoclaves and related equipment using cranes, slings, riggings, scaffolding, booms, block and tackle, and other moving equipment.
Repair and replace electrical motors, pumps and related equipment such as seals and bearing assemblies.
Repair air compressors, heat exchangers, valves, fans and other components of equipment in the waste autoclave plant.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Supervision is received from a designated official.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school supplemented with vocational mechanical training in machine repair or allied trade is necessary; completion of an apprenticeship program in machine repair or allied trade is desirable.
Considerable progressively responsible experience in machine repair or other allied trade is necessary.
Considerable maritime or powerhouse experience with high-pressure boiler operations and waste autoclave and boiler equipment repair and maintenance experience is necessary.
Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and material used in boiler operations and waste disposal systems is necessary.
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of high-pressure boilers, waste disposal systems and related equipment, and the tools, methods and material used in their operation and maintenance is necessary.
Ability to use precision tools, such as micrometers, vibration meters and balancing equipment, and to design, interpret and draw blueprints and sketches and do reports on job assignments is necessary.
Ability to tolerate high levels of heat and noise is necessary.
Thorough knowledge of safety standards and procedures and  EPA and State of Michigan autoclave standards is necessary.
