TITLE: UTILITY SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN - HEALTH SYSTEMS GRADE: E6
 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

To perform and guide others on the use of complex DDC, electronic and /or computerized building management systems, and to operate, test and perform repair work related to building/utilities management and fire systems.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate and perform installation, programming, troubleshooting and repair work for building/utilities and fire equipment.
Inspect maintenance and installation work performed by Systems Monitoring staff, outside contractors and service vendors for quality and completeness.
Coordinate, support and perform project management for building/utilities. 
Coordinate, support and perform fire systems upgrades and new installations with Hospital Maintenance and building managers.
Advise maintenance personnel on shut-down and start-up of equipment and coordinate necessary time, equipment, contractors or software work-arounds for routine and emergency equipment shut downs and repairs affecting systems monitored.
Maintain software integrity of all DDC panels.
Review project designs affecting monitored systems and attend project meetings.
Participate in new systems testing and commissioning as required.
Run and/or mutually perform with Hospital Maintenance staff fire system compliance testing to meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), accreditation agency and insurance carrier requirements.
Create, maintain and provide fire system inspection, testing and repair reports for NFPA, insurance carrier, Fire Marshall inspection and other purposes.
Request and order parts, equipment and materials for repair of building/utilities and fire systems.
Perform minor calibration procedures and inspect control instruments and equipment.
Provide systems data for complex projects to various internal staff and outside consultants. 
Interpret, modify and write software programs and changes affecting building/utilities and fire systems.
Arrange for, conduct and coordinate with Hospital Maintenance and Security staffs fire systems and direct digital control (DDC) training for Systems Monitoring, Hospital Maintenance and Security employees.
Assist with employee suggestion programs.
Assist with energy conservation measures, initiatives and awareness programs.
Coordinate the work of Utility Systems Technician I 's, II's, and/or III 's, or other assigned assistants.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General supervision is received from a designated official.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school, supplemented by two years of technical course work or training in electronics, computer operations or instrumentation systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
Considerable computerized utility systems operations experience working on large, complex computer controlled systems is necessary.
Considerable experience with different computer control languages is necessary.
Considerable experience in maintaining logs and records for utility systems is necessary.
Reasonable experience in the operation and maintenance of automated heating, ventilation and air conditioning control systems is necessary.
Certification in the fire alarm field is necessary.
Thorough knowledge of NFPA standards is necessary.
