BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
As an apprentice to perform work in the fabrication, installation, modification, modernization, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic circuitry, electronic, mechanical and hydraulic equipment, systems and controls, fixtures and wiring for elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair, dock and scissors lifts, vertical reciprocating conveyers, dock levelers and other special elevating devices.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform the following duties as an apprentice:
Fabricate, repair and install control and distribution apparatus, including, switches, relays, resistance tubes, rectifiers, electronic control boards, transformers and power supplies.
Fabricate, modify, maintain, repair, calibrate and adjust complex electronic circuitry and electronic mechanical equipment, including controllers, selectors and dispatching equipment, power operated door mechanisms and car safety mechanisms.
Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and elevator power equipment using hand tools.
Inspect, dismantle and repair motors and generators, replacing bearings, bushings, carbon brushes, springs and brush holders.
Inspect and adjust or replace contacts, shunts, springs, armatures and coils in relays, selectors and controllers.
Inspect, dismantle and repair hoisting machines, including bearings, gears, shafts, brake shoes and brake mechanisms.
Analyze malfunctions of electrical and electronic equipment using test equipment, such as voltmeter, ammeter, oscilloscope, ohmmeter, computers and any other diagnostic equipment used for troubleshooting.
Diagnose malfunctions in electronic circuitry and relay systems and perform or coordinate the repair of electronic circuitry and control systems, including the replacement of electronic relay components.
Inspect, test and adjust electronic elevator boards.
Select materials, methods, equipment and tools to be used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic circuitry and equipment of elevating systems.
Inspect, disassemble, repair and reassemble hydraulic pumps, valves and traction elevating machines.
Replace cables on all elevating devices.
Repair or replace elevator wiring in the machine space, hoist way, car or pit.
Perform demolition activities including removal of devices from service.
Perform safety tests in accordance with state regulations, and perform fire service checks.
Perform the process of stoning, grinding, and undercutting the commutators on motors and generators.
Clean, lubricate, repair, and replace motors, gears, motor generators, governors, sheaves, rails, bearings, truss assemblies, packings and other components.
Inspect, repair, reset or replace contacts on control panels, doors, switches, disconnects and other devices.
Inspect, maintain or replace doors, tracks, cab interiors, flooring, car sills, door re-opening devices, outer door opening mechanisms, gibs, escalator steps, handrail drive chains, guides, balustrades, skirts, decking, comb teeth, rollers and handrails.
Inspect, clean and repair governors, buffers and exhaust fans on car tops.
Inspect, repair or replace car, machine room and hoist way lighting.
Connect and disconnect motors, gears, motor generators and other devices.
Inspect, maintain and install indicator panels and components such as buttons, Braille tags, cover plates, lights, emergency phones and smoke detectors.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, specifications and wiring diagrams.
Repair hydraulic leaks, dispose of hydraulic oil and clean up spills in accordance with OSEH and other safety regulations.
Hoist and rig material for installation or repair.
Paint equipment in machine rooms, pits, hoist ways and car tops.
Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
Clean assigned area of work to include all equipment, machine spaces, top of elevator cars, pits and hoist ways.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives supervision from a designated official.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school.
Completion of course work in mathematics, electronics, electrical repair and mechanical repair is desirable.
Some experience in electrical, electronics and mechanical repair work is desirable.
