TITLE: INDUSTRIAL MACHINIST GRADE: T6

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
 
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Fabricate and set up tools, jigs and fixtures and machine components within a mechanical structure, such as rotors and armatures on turbine generators and elevator motors.
Plan, layout and fabricate component devices and parts for machines and mechanical equipment which modify, simplify or improve performance, or to make obsolete equipment functional.
Disassemble, rebuild and restore to precision operation components of machines and mechanical equipment, such as pumps, motors, valves, governors and hydraulic and pneumatic devices.
Review specifications, lay out metal stock, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair metal-working dies.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, models and descriptions to fabricate and repair parts and equipment.
Verify dimensions, alignments and tolerances using precision measurement instruments.
RELATED DUTIES
Assemble, install, disassemble and repair machinery and mechanical equipment, including component equipment and fixtures.
Dismantle large mechanical units to gain access and remove defective parts using hoists and chainfalls.
Adjust, align and reset functional devices and component parts and start mechanical equipment.
Operate micro-measurement tools in the fabrication, fitting and assembling of close tolerance parts.
Perform foundry work including such duties as pattern making, mold and core preparation, costing and induction, gas and vacuum melting.
Set up and operate machine tools, such as lathes, millers, shapers, planers, drill presses, saws and routers.
Advise users on machinability or other physical properties of materials.
Prepare sketched and specifications from verbal instructions or drawings.
Perform brazing, soldering, welding, hardening, annealing, tempering and enameling.
Cut, shape, drill and form materials, such as aluminum, brass, copper, plastics, wood and various steels.

QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school supplemented by training in the layout and fabrication of tools, jigs, fixtures and machine components.
Reasonable experience in the layout and fabrication of tools, jigs, fixtures and machine components.
Reasonable experience in the set up and operation of metal lathes, milling machinery, industrial drill presses, metal saws and routers.
Considerable knowledge of metal properties and the methods, materials and equipment used in tool and die making and machine operations.
