BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Provide direct and indirect patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse.  The administration of medications and blood products is prohibited.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist staff nurses in providing nursing care.
Assist with the initial assessment of patients' functional status upon admission.
Participate in the ongoing assessment and monitoring of patient status including response to therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Observe and report significant changes in the patient's condition and assist with appropriate corrective measures.
Identify problems presented by patients and families and assist with delegated interventions.
Assist in formulating individual care plans and evaluating nursing care.
Assist in the performance of therapeutic procedures.
Document patient care, including changes in patient status.
Operate and monitor specialized patient care equipment.
Participate in ensuring patient safety.
Participate in health team activities, including patient conferences, discharge planning rounds.
Participate in patient/family education.
Assist in the orientation of patients, families, and new staff to the unit.
Participate in quality improvement activities.

Supervision is received from a Registered Nurse.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

No supervision is exercised.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an approved/accredited Registered Nurse nursing educational program is necessary.
Eligible to take Michigan State Boards.
