BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To provide nursing care in a medical office setting as a member of the health care team.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform physical and psychosocial assessment of patients' functional status and determine and initiate appropriate action.
Report significant changes in patient condition.
Triage patients, both in the office and by phone, to determine appropriate level of care required.  Coordinate patient scheduling with other members of the office team.
Identify problems presented by patients and families and initiate appropriate intervention, including referrals, as directed.
Assess and monitor patient status, both in the office and by phone, including response to medications and therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Provide nursing care to patients, including administration of medications and treatments, as ordered, and perform or assist with diagnostic procedures.
Identify needs for patient and family education, and provide education as indicated.  

RELATED DUTIES

Coordinate efficient patient flow and efficient responses to patient phone calls.
Complete appropriate documentation, forms, and patient correspondence.
Assess patients during office visits, determining reason for visits and related histories, and obtaining appropriate measurements, such as vital signs and weights.
Operate and monitor patient care equipment; set up instruments and supplies for examinations and procedures.
Maintain and order supplies and equipment.
Maintain a safe, clean work environment in accordance with regulatory agency requirements.
May perform some or all of the duties of the Medical Assistant classification.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from the Medical Director or other designated official.  Professional nursing practice issues are supervised by the Director of Patient Care Services or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over other support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a program in nursing is necessary. 
This position requires Primary Source Verification.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan is necessary.
