TITLE: CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST GRADE: N4
 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To provide expert and complex clinical nursing and health care to a specialized group of patients; to function as a Hospital-wide and community consultant; to develop and monitor the implementation of new nursing techniques and standards; and to exercise clinical nursing leadership through practice, staff development and research.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and execute a program of nursing care to provide continuous and individualized care, including managing complex problems of patient care.
Provide skilled observation and health assessments of patients including patient history, physical examinations and appropriate interventions and referrals.
Diagnose and treat health problems for a specialty patient population.
Document patient care and progress and maintain complete and detailed patient and practice records.
Develop, evaluate and revise nursing protocols and standards of practice.
Provide consultation and participate in problem-solving efforts of nursing staff, medical staff and other disciplines.
Develop and implement patient education programs.
Instruct nursing staff, medical staff and other patient service personnel, both formally and informally.
Represent the clinical specialty to external agencies, associations and programs.
Participate in the development, modification and interpretation of policies and procedures.
Assist graduate nursing students in their clinical experience.
Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of student programs in the clinical setting.
Participate in conferences, staff development programs and workshops.
Evaluate, interpret and integrate research findings into nursing practice.
Initiate or participate in research studies.
Establish and maintain quality assurance activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direction is received from a Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing or designated official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision is exercised over Clinical Nurses, LPN's, Allied Health, Service/Maintenance and other support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in nursing is necessary.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan is necessary.
Three or more years of nursing experience as an R.N. with one or more years in the clinical nursing specialty is necessary.
Certification in the clinical specialty by the American Nurse Association is desirable.
Eligibility for appointment in the School of Nursing is desirable.
