FAQs

Q: I have been asked to prepare a report of all the U-Yr equivalent salaries of faculty in my department.  Some of our faculty have twelve month appointments.  How do I convert their salaries to the U-Yr equivalent?

A: Multiply the twelve month salary by nine/elevenths.  U-Yr faculty work nine months during the fiscal year.  Faculty on twelve month appointments are presumed to work eleven months with a one month vacation.  To get the equivalent nine month salary, you multiply the twelve month salary by 9/11ths. Note that some granting agencies, as well as some schools, use a 9/12ths conversion factor.

For example:

$100,000 12 month = $81,818.18 U-Uyr salary using the 9/11th conversion rate
$100,000 12 month = $75,000 U-Yr salary using the 9/12th conversion rate

To convert a U-Yr salary to a twelve month salary, use 11/9th or in the case of some granting agencies, or a few schools, use 12/9ths.

For example:

$100,000 U-Yr = $122,222.22 12 month salary using the 11/9th conversion rate
$100,000 U-Yr = $133,333.33 12 month salary using the 12/9th conversion rate

Q:  One of our assistant professors is leaving the University for a position at another university.  She wants to know when she will receive her last pay check for this academic year.

A:  If the assistant professor is appointed on Schedule 1 U-YR, her last paycheck will by on June 30th.  Schedule 1 appointments have the nine month salary spread over the months of July thru June.  If the assistant professor is a Schedule 2 U-Yr, her last paycheck will be on August 31st.  Schedule 2 appointments have the nine month salary spread over the months of September thru August.  In both cases the faculty member’s benefits will end on May 3onest.

Q:  One of our Professors is retiring at the end of this academic year.  Will he automatically get an Emeritus title?

A:  Emeritus titles are granted to eligible faculty by the Board of Regents upon recommendation of the dean and the Provost (in Flint and Dearborn, the Chancellor). A Retirement Memoir must be prepared by the school/college and sent electronically to the Office of the Vice President and Secretary of the University, with the paper copy to HRRIS.  The HRRIS Director reviews the recommendation, and if it conforms to the SPG regulations then the retirement memoir will be forwarded to the Provost, (or the Chancellor in Flint or Dearborn). The absence of any notification from the Provost to the Secretary indicates an endorsement of the recommendation.  For more detailed procedures see:  Procedure: Emeritus Title, on the UHR Procedures Website.
