A Hospitalist-Nursing Collaborative to Improve Paging Communication

Effective communication between physicians and nurses is essential to optimal patient care, and text paging is a frequent means of this communication. We convened a group of hospitalists and nurses to evaluate the quantity and quality of text paging, standardize paging around common categories, educate nursing and hospitalists, and provide realtime feedback. Our pre-intervention analysis showed that on average, pages within these categories contained less than half the required information. Post-intervention analysis will occur in January 2016. Through creation of an education campaign aimed at standardizing paging, along with iterative feedback on suboptimal pages, we believe that paging communication can significantly improve.
