Take on a task that you have never tried, dislike or hate to do, and is outside of your domain. Stick to it and focus on the learning you've derived from it.
Reflect on your biases. What are they and how could they impact your interactions with others? Develop a goal pertaining to mitigating one bias. Check your progress weekly.
Reflect on and assess your strengths and type or write them into columns. Consider the following areas: technical skills, social competencies, professionalism, time management, organization, follow through, proactive or reactive. Share your list or table with your supervisor and ask for feedback.
Keep a record of the workshops, conferences and events that you attend as well as events to attend in the future.
Identify skills that you seek to develop outside of your job (e.g., Tai Chi, creating podcasts, woodworking).
Create an action plan to learn one new skill well within six months (e.g., ballroom dancing, speaking a foreign language, story telling).
Complete an Individual Development Plan to address and develop challenges and to create an action plan with resources and deadlines.
Assess growth opportunities and then look into a LinkedIn Learning or U-M professional development class that you could take.
Ask a colleague who has been involved in a DEI initiative to recommend classes and events to attend.
