Volunteer with a community initiative or task force that is controversial.

Request to work on a university project that is not meeting goals.

Promptly surface conflict. Determine whether it is one that you can address or contact your HR representative for assistance in deciding whether it is one that should go through official grievance procedures or dispute resolution processes.

Engage in a a dialog with a staff member who is very resistant to applying a new skill required for their job. Collaborate to brainstorm ways to resolve the situation (e.g., peer coach).

Earn conflict mediation certification.

Create a template or question upon which to base an upcoming crucial confrontation.

Check to ensure that recent conflicts you have been involved in have been settled from the other party's point of view.

Ask your mentor or coach for advice about resolving a cultural conflict arising within your team.
