This project started when I was a second career student in the UM school of nursing. I was assigned to a maxio-facial recovery unit where many patients had received tracheotomies to aid in their ability to breath. For these patients to achieve discharge to home, they are required to demonstrate a number of tasks that they have to perform on this surgical manipulation of their airway. This is where I saw a need for a teaching tool for patients who could not learn as well from reading a manual as they could by watching the actual process in demonstration.
At least 50% of a nurses time is spent charting. When I personally have asked 10 out of 10 nurses what they think of MiChart, the disdain is unanimous, it is a flawed interface. We are faced with inputing massive amounts of legally sensitive data into a massive spreadsheet that is neither intuitive nor pleasant to work with. Currently our new system of charting, or "proving that you did what you did" is taking up far too much of the RN's day, and taking away time that should be spent providing quality face to face patient care.
