Human Resources Communications Group

Human Resources Communications Group (HRCG) is a community for HR professionals and others with designated HR liaison roles for their school, college, or unit. HRCG is led by Tim Wood, Senior Director, Staff HR Services, and supports HR work on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses, as well as Michigan Medicine.

HRCG meets every other month during the academic year and provides ongoing communication and support for HR initiatives at the university. For additional information or to request membership in the group, please email us at hrcg-requests@umich.edu.

Resources for requesting a Reduction in Force (RIF)

A request must be submitted for review and approval by the appropriate University Human Resources Office prior to implementation. If the impacted employee(s) have greater than 10 years of service, the central HR office will coordinate the review and approval of the plan with the appropriate Vice President/Chancellor or designee.

Resources for requesting a short-term layoff/effort reduction

A plan must be submitted for review and approval by the appropriate University Human Resources Office prior to implementation. If your proposed plan will affect two or more employees for more than one month, the central HR office will coordinate the review and approval of the plan with the appropriate Vice President/Chancellor or designee.

Request for Short-Term Layoff (Furlough) /Effort Reduction template

Once approved, provide written notification to the affected employees, ideally with a minimum of one-week notice period

PAR transaction resource for furlough and reduced hours

If you are able to end the short-term layoff/reduction early, provide written notification to the affected employee of the recall.
