Extreme Winter Weather Staff Support

To assist critical employees who must report to work during an emergency reduction in operations at the Ann Arbor campus, the university has identified a number of accommodations that may be available to them.

Any employee deemed critical should have been identified and notified by their department. For more information about the university's policy on emergency reduction in operations see the U-M Standard Practice Guide.

  • Parking: During a period of reduced operation, Parking and Transportation Services provides up-to-date information about changes in parking and transportation and may lift parking restrictions to increase access for critical employees reporting to work.
  • Dining halls: Critical employees who must remain on campus beyond their regularly scheduled shift will be able to charge meals at university dining halls back to their department. The employee will need to present his or her U-M ID and department name or short code and should have prior approval from the unit.
  • Overnight accommodations: Departments have the discretion to reimburse critical employees for overnight accommodations if required by the situation. Employees should seek proper approval before incurring any out-of-pocket costs. Hotels with strategic contracts can be found on the Procurement Services website at finance.umich.edu/procurement. A number of additional local hotels offer discounted rates to U-M employees, so make sure to ask when booking.
  • Child care: Critical employees seeking back up child care through U-M's Kids Kare at Home program will be given priority treatment during an emergency reduction in operations. Employees must register in advance to utilize this fee-based service. Also, the U-M Ann Arbor Children's Centers will be open only to critical employees who are already enrolled in one of these centers.

In the event of an emergency, up-to-date information will be posted at umich.edu.
