MHealthy Nutrition Guidelines

To make it easier for the U-M community to identify and choose foods that embody good nutrition, MHealthy and its partners have updated the MHealthy Nutrition Guidelines (pdf). These guidelines emphasize whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, lean protein, low-fat dairy and healthy fats. The U-M Cardiovascular Center's Nutrition Guidelines for Atrium Healthy Heart Cafe have also been updated.

To find foods that meet these new guidelines, look for the MHealthy logo in campus vending machines, at select eateries and through select catering providers. When you see the MHealthy logo, it means:

  • More:
    • Fruits
    • Vegetables
    • Healthy fats
    • Whole grains
  • Less:
    • Saturated fats
    • Added sugars
    • Sodium

The guidelines were updated based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and were created in partnership with Michigan Medicine Retail Food Services; U-M School of Public Health Nutrition Services; Michigan Dining; MHealthy; Michigan Medicine Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes; Michigan Medicine Patient Food & Nutrition Services, and Michigan Medicine Preventive Cardiology.
