Higher than normal blood sugar, or “prediabetes,” affects up to one in three Americans – and many of them don’t know it. Prediabetes makes a person more likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years, and raises the risk of other serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.
The good news is that in many cases diabetes and other health problems can be delayed or prevented through modest lifestyle changes like eating a healthier diet and increasing physical activity. And you don’t have to do it alone. U-M Premier Care members who meet eligibility criteria can join the Diabetes Prevention Program, a nationally-recognized lifestyle change program developed by the CDC, with no out-of-pocket cost.
1. Take a short quiz about your risk factors.

2. Talk to your doctor about prediabetes.
If you score 5 or higher on the quiz, talk to your doctor about getting an A1C blood sugar test to check for prediabetes. An A1C test result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes. 3. Join the Diabetes Prevention Program.
If A1C testing shows that you do have prediabetes, join a group of like-minded individuals in finding support for a healthy lifestyle and reducing health risks. New sessions start every week through Omada Health, and several times per year through partners throughout southeast Michigan. For a quick reference, download this brief guide to getting started.
Four partners offer the Diabetes Prevention Program with no out of-pocket cost to U-M Premier Care members. Each one has been recognized by the CDC to help you prevent type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Prevention Center
Ready, Set, Prevent! The Diabetes Prevention Center is the largest provider of the Diabetes Prevention Program in Michigan and offers workshops in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Dexter, Chelsea, Livonia and the Detroit area. Participants can qualify to use the athletic facilities at Liberty Athletic Club in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor YMCA
Members who join the Diabetes Prevention Program through the Ann Arbor YMCA receive a one-year free family YMCA memberships with full access to the facility. Childcare is available. University of Michigan Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes (MEND) Outpatient Diabetes Education
MEND offers convenient times and U-M locations for Diabetes Prevention Program participants, as well as an ongoing support group after completing the program.
Flint and Dearborn Campuses
For members of our UM-Flint and UM-Dearborn campus communities, the Diabetes Prevention Center offers classes in the Flint and Dearborn areas, and Omada Health offers an online version of the program with new sessions starting every week. U-M Premier Care covers the cost of the program through both organizations.
You are eligible to join the Diabetes Prevention Program with no out-of-pocket cost if you meet all of the following criteria.
- You have U-M Premier Care or GradCare coverage.
- You are an active U-M employee over age 18, an active employee's covered dependent over age 18, a U-M retiree under age 65, or a retiree's covered dependent under age 65.
- You have been diagnosed with prediabetes (A1C reading between 5.7 and 6.4 percent) but not diabetes.
If you have received an invitation letter from BCN or been referred by a physician, you will need to provide your U-M Premier Care member ID number to the DPP program provider when registering so that the organization can verify your eligibility with BCN. If you have recently been diagnosed with prediabetes through an A1C test, complete this form and provide the information to a program provider to register.
If you are not currently eligible for coverage for the DPP, MHealthy offers a wide range of programs to employees and spouses/OQAs to support healthy lifestyle changes around weight management, healthy eating and physical activity. MHealthy also offers a guide to U-M resources for diabetes.
If you successfully completed the DPP with any program provider, consider joining the MEND Prediabetes Support Group - share your experiences, gain support and understanding, and continue to improve your health! The group meets on the second Monday of each month from 6:15 to 7:15 (except in August and December) in the MEND Clinic Lobby (Lobby C) at Domino's Farms. For more information, call (734) 998-2475.
