Michigan Medicine has made the decision to discontinue the UM Health Plan and the Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans it operates effective at the end of 2025. This will allow U-M Health to focus resources on direct patient care, education and research.
Michigan Medicine is the majority owner of the “UM Health Plan,” (formerly Physicians Health Plan, PHP) which operates the Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans. The university will continue to offer other comprehensive health insurance plans to benefit-eligible faculty, staff and retirees.
This does not impact current Michigan Care benefits or 2025 plan year benefits. Member coverage will continue uninterrupted through 2025, and all claims for services provided through Dec. 31, 2025 will be processed by the plan. UM Health Plan is committed to providing high-quality customer service throughout the coming year.
Current members will be able to choose another UM health insurance plan during the next Open Enrollment period in October 2025 for coverage that will be effective on Jan. 1, 2026.
The plan will directly notify Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage members later in 2025 before the plan is discontinued.
