If you intend to waive or reduce the level of personal injury insurance (PIP) on your auto policy, you may be asked by your auto insurance company to provide a letter stating you are enrolled in qualified health coverage.

You can get a Health Care Plan Verification letter through Wolverine Access by selecting Employee Self-Service > Benefits > Health Care Plan Verification (look for the block "M" icon). Follow the instructions on the page to create your letter.

Turn off pop-up blocker and private browsing before opening your Auto Health Care Plan Verification letter. Use of a computer or larger-sized tablet is recommended.

If you’re unable to use Wolverine Access, email [email protected] with your request.

Michigan Auto Insurance Reform

The Michigan state legislature initiated auto insurance reform in 2019 to provide financial relief to state drivers. This reform affects the level of personal injury insurance (PIP) you choose for yourself under your auto insurance plan, as well as others covered under your plans.

As a “no-fault” system, Michigan drivers were previously required to purchase unlimited PIP through the state. Reform now allows you to select the level of PIP you prefer. The PIP coverage you choose will impact the cost of your auto insurance.

Employees and retirees with U-M Health Plans – even with Medicare as primary coverage – are already covered for medical claims resulting from an automobile accident. PIP is the primary coverage for medical claims only when coordinating with plans that pay secondary after auto insurance.
