Safety and Protection

The University’s Department of Public Safety is a full service law enforcement agency. The primary duties and responsibilities of this department are to provide a safe environment for the University community and to protect persons and property. The department operates 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The main office is located at 1239 Kipke Drive. The department also has neighborhood offices in the Pierpont Commons, Palmer Commons, Wolverine Tower, and the Church Street parking structure.

The Department of Public Safety operates a 24-hour, University-wide communications center. Call 911 for any emergency on campus. Emergencies include, but are not limited to, fires, crimes, and injured or sick persons. For all non-emergencies, call (734) 763-1131. You can also contact the communications center by using any emergency phone on campus. Simply lift the receiver on the emergency phone, or press the button as instructed, and your call will automatically be connected to the communications center; no dialing is required with these emergency phones.

Public Safety officers conduct crime prevention patrols on a regular basis and are trained to respond to any emergency. Public Safety officers have jurisdiction on all owned or leased University properties and any public right-of-way traversing or immediately contiguous to the property.

Public Safety officers may require people to identify themselves, particularly if they are in a closed or unauthorized area. Arrangement for obtaining a University identification card (UMID) can be made by contacting your supervisor.
