Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

As a public institution in the state of Michigan, the University of Michigan is subject to provisions of the state’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Under FOIA, “all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees...” Consequently, any individual or organization has the right to inspect and/or receive copies of public records maintained by the University.

If you receive a FOIA request, immediately forward the request to the FOIA Office, 2025 Fleming Building, via fax (734)763-1399 or other prompt means. The FOIA officer or coordinator will contact the appropriate person/office for help in locating responsive documents. The search must be given priority due to the limited time period in which to respond.

The law recognizes that in some instances the public interest may be better served by not disclosing information, and the FOIA provides a number of exemptions ranging from matters of privacy to confidential research-related information. However, the decision whether material can be withheld is made by the University FOIA Office.

For further information, or to arrange staff training on FOIA matters, please contact the FOIA office at (734) 763-5082.
