MHealthy's three-year evaluation shows progress and improvements
MHealthy's three-year evaluation, conducted by the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research
(MICHR) and the Health Management Research Center, was completed recently using data derived from medical and pharmacy costs from 2008-2010 and Health Risk Appraisal data from 2009-2011. Some key findings:
Health Risk Prevalence is Declining:
This chart shows the percentage of HRA participants
considered to be at risk for each of nine different risk factors, ranked in decreasing order according to prevalence in 2009. With the exception of physical inactivity, the individual categories show improvement
from 2009 to 2011. Additional good news is that the number of individuals who are low risk overall is increasing and the number who are high risk is decreasing.
Absenteeism: Self-reported absenteeism due to illness decreased from 3.97 days per year to
3.74 days.
Total Health Care Costs: Combining medical and pharmacy costs to get "total health care costs,"
this chart shows rates of increase were significantly
greater for non-HRA participants as compared to the three-time HRA participants. Given the near equal baseline costs in 2008, this supports an association between HRA participation and improving cost
management (i.e. bending the trend).

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, quitting smoking benefits both the
smoker and his/her family:
- Evidence indicates a 20-30% increase in the risk of lung cancer from secondhand smoke exposure associated with living with a smoker.
- Evidence indicates exposure to secondhand smoke increases risk of coronary heart disease and mortality among both men and women.
- Smoking is the number one reason for avoidable illness and death.
- Over 440,000 people die each year from smoking-related diseases. That's more than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car crash, fire, and AIDS deaths combined.
- Patients who smoke before surgery have twice the risk of infection of nonsmokers.
- Smoking slows healing after surgery.
MHealthy Tobacco Consultation Service provides confidential counseling and support for U-M faculty, staff, and spouses or Other
Qualified Adults who want to quit tobacco. Online, telephonic, and in-person programs are available. Benefits-eligible employees can get a $100 (before tax) incentive for completing a program and coverage for
generic over-the-counter (OTC) tobacco treatment products. Learn more at 734-998-6222 or quitsmoking@med.umich.edu.
