Initiatives

Building Great Places to Work
The Building Great Places to Work (BGPW) Initiative at the University of Michigan focuses on enhancing local working climates to support each of us in working/contributing at our best. BGPW helps units better understand their working environments to become "great places to work." The most effective workplaces are those in which people experience mutual trust, mutual respect, and success. For more information, visit http://www.umich.edu/~hraa/greatplaces

Campus Commitment
A program of UHR’s Office of Institutional Equity, Campus Commitment encourages a welcoming climate built on mutual respect for all members of the U-M community. The program includes interactive discussions, training sessions and publications that define the various forms of discrimination and discuss the ways we can keep our institution’s working and learning environments free of discrimination and harassment. For more information, visit http://www.cc.umich.edu

Child Care Initiative
Caring for children in a safe and developmentally nurturing environment is of tremendous importance to students, staff and faculty. Building on its long history of valuing and excelling at early childhood education, research and service through its nationally accredited child care centers, the University is now working toward increasing capacity, developing new infant and toddler programs, and significantly improving the facilities in which these services are offered. Human Capital Report
The 2007 Human Capital Report produced by University Human Resources is a result of the University of Michigan's increasing need for high-quality human resource decision data. The 2007 Report delves into the retirement outlook and the risks and opportunities that are facing our organization and many others across the country. Using human resource data to understand such demographic trends allows us to consider proactive plans that respond to the challenge and help sustain our leadership position in higher education. For more information or to download a copy of the report, visit http://hr.umich.edu/humancapital/

Human Resources Academy
HR Academy’s goal is to support you by offering training and support for most types of HR educational needs. To do this, we’re building a competency-based learning environment, which will not only offer skill-building courses but also facilitate the sharing of “best practices.” We are also developing a forum where peers can discuss and debate current hot topics. HR Metrics Project
In 2002, UHR implemented a web-based tool that provides a robust set of human resource and financial measurements to support strategic decisions about human capital and staffing.  The tool now incorporates four years of data for trend analysis and allows a unit to “benchmark” themselves against other units to analyze information useful for long-range strategic planning. In partnership with Michigan Administrative Information Services, UHR is refining the tool to incorporate additional data for strategic analysis and monthly data updates. Michigan Healthy Community
MHealthy is a University-wide effort to encourage healthier living through increased activity, attention to physical safety in the workplace, and other health and wellness efforts. It aims to promote discussion and motivate commitment to well-being by embracing health as a community. The initiative was announced in 2004 by President Coleman to promote the health and well-being of the U-M community and advance public discussion and social commitment to change by developing, testing, and studying efforts to improve community wellness.  In Jan. 2007, President Coleman made the program a long-range feature of the university with campus-wide involvement of faculty and staff and an administrative home in UHR. Voices of the Staff
Voices of the Staff is a volunteer-based initiative designed to give University of Michigan staff members a formal mechanism to share ideas and help define the issues that matter most to the faculty and staff community.
